Damage nucleation from repeated dislocation absorption at a grain boundary
Damage nucleation from repeated dislocation absorption at a grain boundary is simulated with molecular dynamics. At the grain boundary–dislocation intersection site, atomic shuffling events determine how the free volume brought by the incoming dislocation is accommodated. This process in turn determines the crack nucleation mechanism, as well as the critical strain and number of dislocations th...
متن کاملFive-parameter grain boundary distribution in grain boundary engineered brass
We report the first application of a five-parameter determination of grain boundary types to grain boundary engineered alpha-brass. The most important findings were that the distribution of planes showed a prevalence of <110> tilt boundaries, especially asymmetric tilt types, and the presence of <111> twist boundaries. This distribution resulted from the low energy of these boundary types.
متن کاملGrain size, size-distribution and dislocation structure
Diffraction peak profile analysis (or Line Profile Analysis, LPA) has recently been developed to such an extent that it can be applied as a powerful method for the characterization of microstructures of crystalline materials in terms of crystallite size-distribution and dislocation structures. Physically based theoretical functions and their Fourier coefficients are available for both, the size...
متن کاملDistribution of Grain Boundary Planes at Coincident Site Lattice Misorientations
The grain boundary plane distributions in MgO, SrTiO3, MgAl2O4, and Al are compared at lattice misorientations with a coincident site density of greater than or equal to 1/9. In most situations, the most frequently adopted grain boundary orientation is a habit plane of low index and low surface energy that depends on the particular material. Cases where the most common boundary orientation is a...
متن کاملDirect visualization of dislocation dynamics in grain-boundary scars.
Mesoscale objects with unusual structural features may serve as the analogues of atoms in the design of larger-scale materials with novel optical, electronic or mechanical behaviour. In this paper we investigate the structural features and the equilibrium dynamics of micrometre-scale spherical crystals formed by polystyrene particles adsorbed on the surface of a spherical water droplet. The gro...
